10th European Academy of Design Conference

17-19 April 2013
School of Design and Crafts (HDK), University of Gothenburg – Gothenburg

Submission of intention to submit: until May 15, 2012

Design is a central field for practice and research in visioning and crafting the future – and facilitating changes that could lead to a better future. Business has realized this to a great extent but also many public organizations have discovered the value of design for developing and communicating services. With the changing role of design, the boundaries of design as well as its practice has changed. When packaged in a process format and language to appeal to managers and large organizations, the core of what designers do is at risk of getting blurred. Designing is about crafting, making, visualizing, and imagining the future, regardless of whether we are involved with products, services, fashion, interactions, or other areas of practice. Have these core activities changed?

We invite design researchers and practitioners to celebrate the 10th conference of the European Academy of Design with contributions to our conversation on the role of design and designers in crafting our futures. We invite empirical studies that return to the roots of design practice, and theoretical frameworks that help us better explore and understand the role of our practice in business and society.

The organizing committee of the 10th European Academy of Design Conference – Crafting the Future – is pleased to invite proposals for papers to the following tracks:

Designing Future Mobility

Bodily, psychic and spatial interiors can be mapped, traversed and violated in multiple ways. This one-day conference will interrogate and re-evaluate the contested terrain of the interior in its varied forms. It will examine the interlacing and overlapping of different types of interiors, and seek to re-position the ‘interior’ in critical terms. Moreover, it will attempt to develop new ways of thinking about the relationship between the decorative arts, furniture, bio-technologies, anatomy and space. The conference will take place in The Courtauld Institute of Art Research Forum and conclude with a keynote address in the Anatomy Theatre at King’s College London.

The conference will be built around three themes: Threshold, Incision and Autopsy. We encourage prospective speakers to outline how their papers engage with one or more of these themes.

EAAE/ARCC Conference on Architectural Research

7-12 June 2012
Milan- Politecnico di Milano

Submission of 500 word abstracts November 6, 2011
Download guidelines here.

Schools of architecture constitute fundamental repositories of knowledge and ability which have, along with the training of students, contributed for a long time to the growth of research in architecture and the city, fields in which they have made and make valuable contributions to society in terms of ideas, proposals and projects.

As institutions heterogeneous, rich in culture and interdisciplinary interests, schools of architecture develop strong links with the city and the surrounding areas, and together constitute a unique operational network capable of contributing in an organic and extended way to the solution of cities’ and regions’ problems of organization, technique and expression.

The Conference aims are linked to the knowledge and sharing of issues, problems and results of research conducted in European and American schools of architecture related to city issues, which are seen as the vast sea into which the rivers of research in architecture flow.

The central goals of the Conference are to increase our knowledge of tools and experimental methods which explore the active relationships between disciplines in solving problems and to examine major achievements.
Other objectives of the conference include recognizing the network of schools, defining their characteristics and abilities and exploring its potentialities through discussion.
Given the complexity, the importance and the dimension of the problems linked to people living in the world today, it is useful to propose a broad and open discussion, knowing that the questions should be addressed in a general way and shared by different cultures.

The intention of the Conference is to involve scholars and teachers from all the continents to compare problems, issues and solutions.

Preliminary schedule of the conference.

The Conference Themes

The well known sentence by Leon Battista Alberti: The house is like a small city and the city is like a big house, stressing a recognized Italian tradition on urban studies, is a brief and clear indication of the Conference themes that underlines the tight connections among Architecture and City. The Conference proposal is to discuss the role of architectural research in relation to issues linked to urban transformation, which are more relevant than ever given the widespread urbanization of large parts of the world, given the problems of diametrically opposed so-called shrinking cities and also given the severity of the effects of climate change and energy issues.
Since research in architecture mainly concerns the relationships between nature, technique, history and society, arguments are developed in a thematic matrix in which the issues of sustainability and energy are always included. The general topics are closely related to the problems that architectural research must unavoidably face today, particularly in cities that can be crucial contributors to climate change.

The Conference invites teachers, researchers and scholars to send in abstracts for papers about Ideas, Methods, Techniques, Tools and Case Studies of urban transformations on the following general themes:

1. Knowledge of the City for Urban Transformation
Studies and experiences of technical knowledge that allow us an almost complete understanding of the physical realities of the cities and the surrounding areas. At the same time, the city’s history has played and plays a central role in the understanding of urban form and identity and their possible transformations.

2. History, Theory and Criticism of Architecture and Urban Design
Studies and historical cases in the relationships between architectural design and town development – from the transformation of ancient sites to a megalopolis, with its lack of balance between downtown and suburbs, to the construction of new towns. Current theory and critical thinking required to deal with the challenge faced by architecture from the new global and local dimensions of the urban experience.

3. Criticism, Conservation and Restoration
Studies and design or planning experiences in conservation and restoration, aimed to create a critical attitude when making conscious choices within the existing city.
The development of refined analytic, diagnostic and intervention techniques and procedures for tutorship, conservation, maintenance and compatible reuse of the heritage, which we recognize to be important in tracing the culture of the past that must be considered a living part of the present and of the future.

4. Housing and the Shape of the City
Studies and experiences in housing and residential settlements, taking account of the careful use of soil, proper integration between public and private spaces, and of a wide variety of types and housing solutions.

5. Architecture and Technical Innovation
Studies and experiences in current areas of innovation in architecture, including the characteristics of materials and construction processes, in view of a city that can properly resolve constructive problems through solutions for rapid and durable realization. Evaluation of the role of energy needs in the processes of transformation and construction of the new city, as well as other areas of technological innovation relevant to the conference theme.

6. Infrastructure Networks and Landscape
Studies and examples of infrastructure design as a field of interdisciplinary practices, characterized by the research on the compatibility between networks and affected landscapes and as a field of study in new terminal nodes and new public spaces.

7. Education in Architecture
Teaching experiences on issues connected to the transformation of cities in relation to the various fields of knowledge

The new deadline for 300 word abstracts is September 21, 2011

For further informations:
Associate Professor Mark Taylor mark.taylor@qut.edu.au

FLOW 2, the second of the FLOW conferences will be hosted by the Landscape Architecture program, Melbourne School of Design at the University of Melbourne, Australia, from the 8th to the 10th of February, 2012. The FLOW 2 conference invites theoretical and practice based scholarship that focuses on interiors and landscapes that arise from the emergence of increasingly fluid and virtual spatial environments.
In 2011 FLOW 1 introduced a historical perspective to the transitional and intermediary relationships between interiors and landscapes and was hosted by the Modern Interiors Research Centre (MIRC) in collaboration with the Landscape Interface Studio, Kingston University, London.

Recent interior focused conferences such as Interior Spaces in Other Places (IDEA 2010) and FLOW 1 (MIRC 2011) explored interior and landscape as they relate to the transference of thoughts and ideas across disciplinary boundaries and cultures. Themes from these conferences broadly investigated theories of historic and contemporary space including the transitional spaces of the modern interior as intermediate zones of occupation and performance that expand into the territories of exterior space. Building upon these earlier enquiries FLOW 2 (2012) is concerned with the theoretical and practice based examination of historical and contemporary interiors and landscapes, particularly where new ideologies emerge that are shaped by corporate, political and ecological initiatives. Fluid urban conditions such as supermodern public spaces – international airports, shopping malls, urban plazas and post industrial parks – render problematic the relatively simple concepts of ‘inside’ and ‘outside’, ‘private’ and ‘public’, ‘domestic’ and ‘non-domestic’, and place and ‘non-place’. Likewise global concerns such as climate variability, economic instability and transnationalism are similarly informing discussion about design, occupation and conservation, particularly where local ecologies and practices are impacted by the flow of change.

Thematic prompts for FLOW 2 seek research papers that propose critical adjacencies to transcend traditional dualities in order to explore the mobile ground of interior and exterior space and place.

.

Fluid territories and altered intersections

Performance topographies

Continuous interiority

Cinematic landscapes and virtual domains

Global experience across forms and processes

For FLOW 2 we welcome proposals for 20 minute conference papers and proposals for exhibition of creative works of the theory and practice. The latter creative work may be speculative, live or realised projects capable of exhibition. We welcome submissions and collaborations from practice.

An abstract of 300 words should be submitted to mark.taylor@qut.edu.au (subject header: FLOW 2).

Please include a separate biographical paragraph (maximum 200 words) including your institutional affiliation, position, contact details, and the title of your paper. This will appear in the conference programme if your paper is selected.
The aim is to publish refereed papers from both FLOW 1 and 2 conferences in a single publication. The extended deadline for abstracts is September 21 2011.

Provocation:

Interior: a State of Becoming explores, extends and challenges the world of the interior as a state of constant and dynamic ‘becoming’ rather than ‘being’. The focus of the 2012 Symposium, the interior in flux, draws attention to the following questions:

Entropy followed by death and renewal is the natural cycle. How do we reconsider the interior and the occupant becoming ‘old’? Where is the value in constantly ‘becoming’ new? How do facebook, the virtual window of the computer, the mobile phone, and their precedents, the book, the magazine, the camera, the ‘big’ screen and the television drive our expectations, visions and experiences of actual, physical interiors? What is adaptive re‐use (as distinct from the practice of ‘conservation’)? What and how do we recycle? How do we re‐vision the history of interiors in the light of ‘becoming’? What are the potential roles and responsibilities for Interior Designers / Architects in addressing becoming homeless and ‘being’ disadvantaged?

Streams:
Topics will be streamed in relation to the themes: (TBC)

CALL for CREATIVE WORKS for EXHIBITION:

The common desire to be a designer is to create and produce speculative and/or tangible works. For designers who have shifted into education and by association research practice, the framing of research through design and with design has been a challenge. Recently research authorities have broadened their fields to validate creative work in a variety of manifestations. This ‘becoming’ of creative work as research not only addresses the separation [or frustrations] for the design practitioner/educator but also prompts critical reflection on the process and fields of creative work as research.

The state of ‘becoming’ as to happen, from the verb ‘hap’ [as spontaneous event or display] is the tenet to engender creative research output for the Exhibition Interior: a State of Becoming.

The curators of the exhibition Interior: a State of Becoming invite proposals from researchers in interior architecture and interior design education and practice to submit proposals of speculative and or tangible creative work for exhibition. The exhibition will run in conjunction with the 2012 IDEA Symposium Interior: a State of Becoming. Therefore similar to the call for written papers, responses to the same provocation and themes of the 2012 IDEA Symposium are sought for the exhibition. Proposals may include active and static, virtual and non‐virtual, 2‐dimensional and 3‐dimensional, constructed, speculative or performative piece/pieces or installations.

The following must be considered:

1. FUNDING and TRANSPORT: Exhibitors will be responsible for obtaining funding for making, exhibiting and transporting the work (to and from Perth) and strictly within the nominated timeline;

2. TIMELINE AND INSTALLATION: Proposals must outline how and when the work will take place and what additional material, if any, may be required as part of the proposed exhibit;

3. FINAL PRESENTATION OF WORKS: Where, when and how ‐ will be decided via negotiation with the exhibition curatorial team and symposium organisers who will make the final decision;

4. REGISTRATION: All exhibitors must register for the Symposium Interior: a State of Becoming.

Proposal Submission requirements: 1 document (with 3 images as per instructions outlined below)

Proposals are to include a 300 word abstract and 3 images inserted for blind review in PDF format no larger than 10 MB. Please also submit online using the URL below a 50 word biography including your name and affiliation and noting any previous exhibitions. Submit the complete proposal using the URL below by 1 October 2011.

EXHIBITION CATALOGE: proposals and also the creative works to be exhibited along with contextualising statement are to be blind refereed. Contextualising statement and images of work will be published and available at the symposium.

IMPORTANT DEADLINES / DATES

Call for creative works proposals: 28 August 2011

Deadline for submission of proposal abstracts, 3 images and 50 word bio: 1 October 2011

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
POLITECNICO DI MILANO
24 _ 25 June 2010

Consumption and image: these two words can describe the conditions of contemporary society, whose life space is increasingly less real and more and more imagined, increasingly less steady and more transitory. Unreal and represented, the painted or illuminated surface, the sketched project or the model replace the concrete way for things to be, overcoming the traditional concept of “building”, which means creating firm and enduring materialities. In such new conditions, architecture is more and more often an exhibition set and a staged space.

We are faced with a peculiar aesthetics of space: it is the aesthetic of the temporary, of media, advertising and spectacle: generally speaking, the aesthetics of communication.
The city, with its architectures and its “exterior” [outdoor] and “interior” [indoor] spaces, cannot be measured only in its volumes, in its voids and heights, but identifies itself more and more often with messages and images, in a sort of disarticulation and pulverization of the elements that used to define it. The new space spreads in different directions, it is overlapping and coexisting; it is a plural idea of public space: space of knowledge, culture, consumerism, goods. The city appears like a chaotic whole of contrasting forces, from which every idea of harmony and composition seems to be banished.

Division and contrast, hybridisation and contamination, these are the new words upon which it seems possible to build a new urban order and a new system of logical connections. They involve the spaces of community life, where interior architecture and exhibition design contribute to spatially and figuratively defining sceneries.

CONVEGNO INTERNAZIONALE
POLITECNICO DI MILANO
24 _ 25 giugno 2010

Thursday 29th and Friday 30th March 2012
Ravensbourne, London.

Reinventing Architecture and Interiors: the past, the present and the future
An International Conference on the re-use and re-design of buildings in contemporary settings

Submission of 300 word abstracts November 1, 2011

Conference Outline:

The history of design has traditionally been a story of new ideas, new theories and, above all, new construction. However, today, the developed world is on the cusp of a new era. The financial crisis, the sustainability movement and the conservation agenda are all leading to ever more alterations of existing buildings and ever fewer new build projects. This new condition will have major consequences for all those involved in the design of the built environment both now and in the future.

The objective of the conference is to examine the practice of interior design and architectural re-use in the context of this new condition. It will look at historical tendencies, current conditions and future possibilities.

The conference will be diverse and inclusive in outlook. It will encourage debate on professionalism, the creative process, representation, innovation and the importance of precedent. It welcomes case studies, research projects, theoretical texts, technological insights and thoughts on education and practice.

The theme of PAST, PRESENT and FUTURE offers participants the chance to look at any aspect of the theme from the vantage point of time.

Delegates are expected to deliver a 20 minute presentation and submit a 3000 word paper. Selected texts will be published in an accompanying book.

Key note speakers: David Dunster and Paul Finch

1st November 2011 Submission of 300 words abstracts14th November 2011 Abstract Feedback

Suggested Themes:

The conference aims to be diverse and inclusive. Proposals are welcome from all disciplines. The common thread is a focus on the renovation of buildings and interiors seen in the context of the past, the present or the future.

The following is simply a guideline of possible questions / themes:

What are the socio-economic, political or cultural factors that have led to an increased importance for the renovation of buildings and their interiors?

What themes dominate the practice of re-design and re-use today?

Do current issues have historical roots and will they resonate in the future?

What will be the cultural and social changes of the future that will influence the re-design of existing spaces and buildings?

How have the artistic, creative, theoretical, scientific and / or philosophical trends of the past influenced our approach to alteration today?

What are the past, current and future characteristics of education that could inform our tactics and strategies of re-use?

Is the traditionally understood distinction between architecture and interior design likely to change in a context of ever growing re-use?

Is there a direct relationship between re-use and sustainability and if so, what are its defining characteristics?

What was / is / will be the role of construction, design and visualisation technologies in our approach to re-designing existing spaces?

What are, have been, and what will be, the creative processes used by spatial designers working with existing structures and buildings?

Is there anything that distinguishes the creative process of designers working with existing structures?
